❤️‍🩹 Things That Helped Me Heal

Lessons From Recovery

Recovery wasn't one big breakthrough "I made it" moment.

For me, it was lots of little moments. So, I’m sharing the things that helped things click for me, in the hope they might make something click for you too.

✨ Pick what feels useful today

Four little things you can try

You do not need to do these in order, finish all four, or turn recovery into homework. Pick the one that feels useful. Tap its heading to open it, or use the buttons below to jump straight there.

Give it a 'name' Separate your voice from the eating disorder voice. Open this gameHide this game (your choices stay here)

My mum had read online that naming your ED voice helped detach yourself from it. By treating/acting/speaking to it as a someone/something else, you can begin to separate yourself from the illness.

It's about perspective

How my eating disorder got its name…

I was in Tesco about to have a meltdown over food when my mum suddenly turned to me and shouted: “BYE, FELICIA.” I burst out laughing. And it stuck.

From then on, Felicia became the name for the eating disorder voice in my head. It gave us a way to call it out, talk back to it and, little by little, recognise that Felicia wasn't me.

*iykyk = if you know you know (and if you don't it's a famous line from the 1995 movie 'Friday').

Okay but… what do you
actually say to that?

Because knowing you want to say the right thing and knowing what on earth to say in the actual moment are two very different things 😅 Pick a reply, see how it might land, then try another. Tiny wording changes can make a BIG difference.

Pick a reply and I’ll translate what she might hear underneath the words, why it could land that way, and what you could say instead.

✨ Tiny reminder: there is no magical perfect sentence. The replies marked as strongest are simply the ones most likely to keep the door open. Caring, slightly clumsy and actually said beats having the perfect words in your head three hours later.

A serious bit before you go. Eating disorders are illnesses, not choices, phases or someone being “difficult”. They can get better, and asking for help earlier really matters. If any of these conversations feel a little too real for you or someone you love, please tell a GP, school nurse or another adult you trust. You do not have to wait until it looks “bad enough” before you are allowed support.

A little safety note: this tool can help you notice patterns, but it cannot tell you exactly what is happening medically. If you are fainting, having chest pain, severe or persistent dizziness, a racing or irregular heartbeat, confusion, severe weakness, or you feel physically unsafe, please seek urgent medical help. If you are in eating disorder treatment, your own clinical or meal plan should always come before suggestions on this page.
